I Never Was To Africa Copyright © 1984 Nemesis Publishing, All Rights Reserved

If you're ever sitting where the rushes grow

Or you catch a red rose bloom

Or if you're ever standing where a raging river flows

And you feel yourself a lonesome tune

That's right it's me again

Right by your side

And you can yell out through the wind "She's mine"

And 'tho the wind might wail it will not cry

It will say "She always was and so am I"

I never was to Africa 'tho it comes up in my dreams

And we never got our hearts in tune

If time is what it seems

But maybe when you're with someone

who you understand

And you tell them "I love you"

Well maybe I'll be with someone and I'll take their hand

And I'll say "I love you too"

And if I'm ever where the rushes grow

Or I catch a red rose bloom

Or if I'm ever standing where a raging river flows

And I feel myself a lonesome tune

I'll know it's you again right by my side

And I'll yell out through the wind "She's mine"

And while the wind might wail it will not cry

It will say "She always was and so am I".

Ferron's most beautiful song. It has a very profound meaning for me--wipes me out every time I hear it. Thanks for the beautiful accompanying images.

A friend told me about your music. And, you know, I have spent many years working in Africa. This song is the ghost of my mentor and friend who rests in Rwanda at the base of Karisimbi. Thank you.

Thank you for watching and for your kind comment. It felt good :-) If you aren't familiar with Ferron - her poetry is as good as it gets. This song evokes in me a beautiful sadness - the beautiful sadness of the soul.
