Andy Kirk's band was one of the early swing bands that began the transition from the traditional style to swing in the late 20s and early 30s. The band consisted of some fine musicians, notably pianist Mary Lou Williams who was an arranger and mainstay of the band. On this number singer Billy Massey gives the vocal refrain. I can't find out who wrote this number - does anybody know?

Not sure everyone would call it the "best" version, but there is certainly a very memorable version by Roy Evans 'The Yodelin' Man' from 1930 posted by cdbpdx. It features the singer, so the band plays a supporting role but nevertheless does some very nice work. And the vocal has to be heard - description doesn't do it justice! It's my favorite version (so far)...15 years ago

Thanks for posting! I NEVER HEARD ANY EARLY ANDY KIRK TUNES TILL I FOUND YOUTUBE! I think I have a version of this by Earl Burtnetts Hotel Biltmore Orchestra. Andy Kirks band was great!! PeterDeRose also wrote "Muddy Water", "Rain" , "Somebody Loves You" and "On a Little Street In Singapore". Great standards from the 20s and 30s!15 years ago
