This hymn was written as a testament to a difficult time in John Newton's life. He and his friend William Cowper had embarked on a project that was to become the Olney Hymns Collection, but not long into the project, Cowper went insane.

Newton wrote that it seemed as though God was going out of his way to make life difficult for him then realized that even through adversity, God continues to work.

I think many come to Faith believing that all of life's problems including our inward ones will just be removed. We would be partly right in believing this but the process of our renewal can be a painful letting go of our pride and worldly desire. A total reliance on the Lord is the result and quite worth the struggle!! Great Hymn!!

It's perfect. I'm so glad that this song was resurrected. It's timely, it's relevant, and people need to hear it and let it get deep into their souls.

I think it's because they have excellent theology; I have found the American modern Protestant church tends to...forget to teach Church history and theology. Which is why I like Reformed Protestant churches; they have good mixes of songs and fantastic teaching! :)

Why is it that seemingly only the old hymns describe authentic Christian experience in a fallen world? The bible also includes the Psalms and lamentations...
