From Odessey & Oracle.

(Rod Argent)

Well I remember yesterday

Just drifting slowly through a crowded street

With neon darkness shimmering through the haze

A sea of faces rippling in the heat

And from that nameless changing crowd

A sweet vibration seemed to fill the air

I stood astounded staring hard

At men with flowers resting in their hair...

A sweet confusion filled my mind

Until I woke up only finding everything was just a dream

A dream unusual of its kind

That gave me peace and blew my mind

And now I'm hung up on a dream...

They spoke with soft persuading words

About a living creed of gentle love

And turned me on to sounds unheard

And showed me strangest clouded sights above

Which gentle touched my aching mind

And soothed the wanderings of my troubled brain

Sometimes I think I'll never find

Such purity and peace of mind again...

O & O cost £1000 to make (Sgt Pepper cost twenty five times that). The band put up another £200 for the stereo mix. The "Time Of The Season" single went on to sell 2 million copies worldwide. Incredibly, the album wasn't released in the US until 1969, after prompting by Al Kooper

Got to say this is probably my favourite song by The Zombies! To me it captures exactly what the zombies were trying to do with Psychedelic Rock; smooth intertwining harmonies of vocals, keyboards, mellotron and guitar that come together only to slowly slip away from each other briefly, then back into it! A#1 stuff... Sad they thought this was as far as they could go with the sound, but Odessey also seems like a perfect end for them

This and "This Will Be Our Year" are the relatively hidden gems on O&O. Actually it's all gems, I just especially adore the way those sparkle.

Chris White: "Hung Up On A Dream" was our token flower power song, but we were never influenced by psychedelic drugs or any drugs whatsoever. There was this one period where there was this incredible hope, around the time of Monterey, and we believed in it too, it wasn't cynical. -- Zombie Heaven box set book

This song may not be too impressive on first listen, but once you get it stuck in your head it feels exactly like when you remember a dream.

Mole stood still a moment, held in thought. As one wakened suddenly from a beautiful dream, who struggles to recall it, and can recapture nothing but a dim sense of the beauty of it, the beauty! Till that, too, fades away in turn, and the dreamer bitterly accepts the hard, cold waking and all its penalties... The Piper at the Gates of Dawn ~ The Wind in the Willows 1908Kenneth Grahame

One of the most unusual songs I have ever heard. No beginning or end, just JOY!

This may be my favourite on the album - the piano melody in the intro gives me the chills, and the sounds here make an amazing psych-pop atmosphere.
