If ever a song started to live it's own life after participating in several contests, it must be this "Volare" written in 1958 by Domenico Modugno. The song was launched at the San Remo Music Festival and became the Italian entry for the Eurovision Songcontest in 1958. It didn't win (3rd place) but it became a "big winner" later on. The song conquered the world in no time and one of the first artists to record a cover was American crooner Dean Martin. His vocal version is, without any doubt, the best known rendition but many vocalists included the song in their repertoire, as did many orchestras and instrumentalists. The song became a real evergreen during the past fifty years and has been used in movies, tv-shows, commercials, theatre plays etc. So we thought it definitely can be ranked among the "big ones" - the songs and tunes everybody knows and recognizes after only a few notes.
Here American arranger and orchestrator Hugo Winterhalter brings us a playful and mood enhancing arrangement, recorded in 1962.
From the Album "Goes Continental" here's Hugo Winterhalter and His Orchestra with the "pop classic" - "Volare". Enjoy.
