Axton explained in the Oregon News-Review: "Jeremiah was an expedient of the time. I had the chorus for three months. I took a drink of wine, leaned on the speaker, and said 'Jeremiah was a bullfrog.' It was meaningless. It was a temporary lyric. Before I could rewrite it, they cut it and it was a hit."

Judy Mowatt, one of Bob Marley's backing singers did a Reggae version of this, which is the reason I ended up here while tracing original versions of covers.

Wow, never knew this wasn't written by 3DN. Didn't even know this guy was a musician.

I all the years I've been aware of this fine song, I've only known the Three Dog Night version. I knew Hoyt Axton wrote this. Both versions of "Joy To The World" are excellent! R.I.P., Hoyt Axton & Joe Schermie (TDN).
