It's difficult to explain what constitutes a smash hit record, but Howard Morrison's unparalleled bi-lingual version of How Great Thou Art (Whakaaria Mai) delivered a Number One hit that stayed atop the singles charts for weeks and weeks on end. Seen here performing his signature tune mid-career in 1982, little wonder this outstanding performance is followed with a standing ovation as Sir Howard demonstrates the prowess that helped cement his unique position at the apex of NZ entertainment...

My dad always listened to him, I still do today. No one will ever perform this as good as he did.

Mum and dad visited New Zealand and fell in love with Howard Morrison. He had a galaconcert in front of the Queen of England. He showed the Maori persona to the world. Thanks for the memory.

I would see him roaming the streets of rotorua often, amazing how with all that talent in his prime he got no where really in the end.

I do not understand their language I have never met a Maori - but they are among my very favorite people. I love the way they sing, dance, look and simply are and I love their Haka (sp) - I am a great rugby fan. This singer is tremendous.

Thanks for uploading. In the video notes it says"It's difficult to explain what constitutes a smash hit record". Its easier to just show it instead. Thanks again for uploading

This was an awesome version by Sir Howard and may he R.I.P. The version he sang in the NZ 1981 Queens variety performance was where he stamped his signature on this rendition and it also featured a powerful and moving version of "Island in the sun" by John Rowles which also topped the charts! I wish TVNZ release that entire 1981 performance!
