First of a mulitpart series covering all aspects of recording live drums in a metal mix.

If you've ever wanted to learn how to record a live drum kit, start here!

Part Zero focuses on my philosophy of why it's important to work with live drums, instead of taking a shortcut with samples.

The drummer that insists on using his kit in the studio . If there is a studio kit , usually it's been recorded 100's of times and the engineer knows how to make it rock . Why is it that the great session drummers will use the studio kit without question but 1st time in the studio guys want their kit ..... fucking irritating .

Samples are a means to an end, more or less, same as anything else. Not the best one out there, but they'll do if that's all you've got.

I use samples all the time for blending into the original kit. Replacement isn't for me but blending is badass! Doesn't sound un natural at all

I don't know about you, but I sure as hell wouldn't try beating up my drummer. I mean hell, its his job to sit back there and beat things with his wood. I'd rather not piss that guy if I can help it. But what do i know, I'm a useless cunt... i mean bassist.

+SpectreSoundStudios Totally agree with live drums vs. samples. But i'd love to hear a showdown. Maybe take your intro song and replace with best attempt at using samples?

People keep complaining about not being able to find a drummer. Thats because metal drummers(most of them anyway) are drooling morons who can't play below a fucking fortissimo. Hire a studio musician or a jazz drummer. They are versatile and not terrible at drums.

I'm not sure on this one, just because I've had to work with drummers who can't keep time, or have fucking awful dynamics. I recorded my main drummer with an e-kit with mesh heads into superior metal foundry so I captured more of the nuances of his performance, but fixing it was a hell of a lot easier. No amount of editing a real performance will fix that shit, but with MIDI you absolutely can in a matter of minutes. And we've had two albums out with this method, and like one guy noticed, who was a producer. A couple of other producers were fucking amazed when I told them it was actually samples.Admittedly though if I could work with a drummer who could actually fucking play in time and hit them hard enough, real drums every time.

A great guitarist from Argentina"Pappo" once said. "Electric Drums (I guess he meant samples) are Japan's revenge for the Hiroshima bomb. LOL
