i love theorizing music. i think dannys part is about being alone in the world or left out, and just wanting to be love or find acceptance. To the people debating the meaning of "Who left the door open? Who left me outside?" Here's what I think.When I hear the words "Who left the door open" it's because in the winter it's cold outside. And if someone leaves the door open even just a crack, the heat escapes. You feel it get cold and then someone like Mom says those words. So the words "who left the door open?" to me means someone left the door open one's heart and emotions. Someone came in your life, left, and left the door open, leaving you hurt and letting the cold in...Then from another angle, a different yet similar comparison "Who left me outside" also creates a similar feeling of hurt. In this case it is loneliness. When you get left outside in the cold, you are left behind. You are cast aside and not cared about. Then the next two lines, "I'm on my knees and I'm hoping that someone holds me tonight. Holds me tonight." further reinforce that interpretation that when you're lonely, you really want someone to be there for you and hold you in those cold cold nights. That's my 2 cents. I can relate to this song. If I heard this song back in 2013, I'd be bawling because of how perfectly this song described me and my life back then. Therefore, the lyrics of the song come so natural to me. They click and make sense. That's why this song is so powerful.
