Here's my version of the bassline for Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'". I believe it's Donald "Duck" Dunn who plays on the original, however, this backing track is actually a newer version that Sam & Dave recorded sometime in the 80's for a "Best of" collection called "Sweet & Funky Gold".

On these songs with no count-in, I sometimes get lucky and manage to hit the opening note. Here's an example where I'm not lucky. :)

The "Blues Brothers" movie (one of my all time favorites) inspired me to seek out some Sam & Dave, and so glad I did! So I'm actually glad they didn't put it on the soundtrack, because I was determined to go find it. Glad you liked the cover and thanks for commenting :)

Great cover of a great tune. I've loved this tune ever since I first heard the small part of it in "The Blues Brothers" film. I wish it would have made the movie soundtrack album. And is it just me or is the most interesting part of this tune during the bridge (I guess it's the bridge) when you drop to the F# from the G#? That F# really sticks out nicely.

Great suggestion -- Carla is awesome and I would love to do more STAX stuff; the only problem is .... Time Is Tight! (no pun intended!) If I get some spare time with "Name That Bass Line!" I'll certainly give it a shot!

Thanks for the feedback! I actually don't have flats on this bass (Check out my "Soul Man" cover, that is a P-Bass with flats). This is an active Lakland with DR Lo-Riders, a Bartolini pre-amp and pickups. The thump comes from right hand muting that I do with my 2nd finger.

I really dig your tone man! I rarely hear J style basses thump like a vintage P. I'm guessing you were using flats. Am I right? What's your setup? Based on your bass's head stock you're playing a Lakland, but is it active or passive and any tips on which pickup you were favoring or any info about your EQ on you amp would be cool.
