Antonio Banderas was the best thing in the entire film. I was stunned. I had never been impressed with him at all before I saw Evita. From the moment he first appeared onscreen as the janitor in the seedy hotel, I was completely won over. I smiled all through the film, I was enjoying his performance so much. Instead of wandering through the story as Che Guevara, wearing fatigues, as the character did in the stage play, Banderas was a different character in each scene, from the janitor in the run down hotel, to an aristocrat at a garden party to all of the other incarnations. And he could sing! One of my favorite performances of all time! As soon as I got home, I called a friend with whom I was supposed to see another film the next day and said that Banderas was so terrific that we should see Evita instead...and we did. She was as impressed as I was!
