Elvis goes country on an HBO program in 1981. A few things to note:

1) The band consists of regular Attractions Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve, with Nick Lowe on bass and John Hiatt on guitar.

2) Elvis has the mumps or something.

3) That's a mighty nice Ferrington guitar he's playing

I saw this show in 81. It was a George Jones special, with multiple guests. Elvis was one of them. I remember he really tore this one up. George was impressed. Tammy Wynette was on there, as well as Tanya Tucker. Great show!

perfect interpretation of the song....he's great....I remember, poor Elvis had the mumps and was all puffy looking, but sang great anyways

Thanks for posting this lpstd! I remember back in the day when we Elvis listers would get together for "listening parties" on the net...you were one of the listeners! It's great to see these videos ...back in the day we would have died to have access to all of them! Missmcbth.

what doesn't he do well?...one of the most versatile and original musicians of our time....ok..the desert island question....if you could have music from only one artist which one would it be?, I think I would take EC. After reading all remarks I was thinking of the high intelligence of his "fans"...good work all.

Great post. I never saw this when it came out. I loved Almost Blue as a CD and this one is one of the best on there. Elvis's golden period where he could do no wrong.

Saw him last night! He was very good! Loved his version of All or Nothing at All, don't think he has recorded it though!.

Elvis C. Has always had great respect for country music. I was shocked when I saw this on HBO years ago. I thought he pulled it off quite nicely.

This was a great show. I have it on video tape still. Almost Blue was a great album too.

this has always been a definitive Elvis performance, the song seems to have been written for his plaintive dynamo of power and delivery, the crowd response is undeniable, paople are witnessing the coronation of the new, and still reigning, king of rock n roll...long live the king and may g-d bless his kingdom and we, his subjects!

Yeah, the George Jones H.B.O. special was in 1980 I believe.....I bet I watched ten times as this song by Elvis C. was the highlight for me. Elvis really is the king.
