Okay, I'm not even British, but any big display of patriotism (not to be confused with nationalism/colonialism) makes me tear up. This is gorgeous.

It is a promenade. The last night is a celebration of classical music, when thousands gather to sing Patriotic songs such as this one (in short). This is broadcasted to Hyde Park and other places where there are more singing (including me this year).

Thank you, yet another example of how your broadcasting organization is far superior to ours. We have minimal representation of the arts on our tv.

Plus the British are still loved nowadays in Malta, and in 1958 Malta, voted in favor of integration with Britain, however the agreement collapsed since Britain felt that Malta was too much of an economic setback.

The Maltese actually asked to be colonized when Malta was conquered by Napoleon. The British than came here and together with the Maltese defeated the French. According to the treaty that was signed afterwards, Malta was to be handed back to the knights, however the Maltese petitioned against this and threatened to commit suicide if Malta was to be given back to the Knights of St John. Instead they said, Malta should be given to Britain, and so was done in the treaty after the battle of Leipzig.

The Proms or Promenade Concerts are a series of mainly classical music concerts held in the Royal Albert Hall - London over the course of July/August every year. produced by the BBC. The Last Night is a let your hair down event for both orchestra and promenaders, this clip is from the final hour which is mainly British patriotic songs. All concerts are available on line from the BBC website.

Some of us #Brits are rather low key in our approach to celebrating our unique heritage, but for one evening of the year we let it all go #BBCLastNightOfTheProms

Funny to have someone from an old colony of the British empire singing "Rule Britannia!"

I love the passion of the British. It brought tears to my eyes.

Ok, I'm a (sort of) educated Brit, so here goes: A "Prom" is a concert from the world's largest classical music festival (with some jazz, world, comedy and show tunes thrown in), the BBC Proms - run by the BBC, all broadcast live on Radio 3 and most taking place at the Royal Albert Hall. Go to bbc.co.uk and click "about" then "history" to read all about it! Or wikipedia will tell you! It's been going steady since 1895 and each year gets bigger and bigger!

As an ignorant American (ignorant, not stupid...I AM making an inquiry to educate myself) what exactly IS "Last Night of the Proms" anyway? Is it a series of shows and this is the last episode? What is a "prom?" A promenade? Please, inform me. I love this by the way.

Very good but I do prefer Bryn Terfel in 2008! Crowd seem much more enthused this year though!!!

Great stuff! Never miss LNOTP if i can help it... Patriotism is not dead in this country (sometimes a little lacking) but definitely not dead!! Tenor Soloist Joseph Calleja is Maltese (as was my paternal grandmother) which makes me about 25% Maltese too! ;-)
