Preamble: Listen up, you slack-jawed twats:

It's beyond irrelevant, but Todd's not gay. You'd know that if you had at least two brain cells to rub together. So please just STFU with that line of commentary, mmmkay?

This is an audio commentary, really, and an experiment testing my skills at audio sweetening.

I love this video and his vocal in it, and saw the show when it originally aired. That Todd does the live piano and vocal against the backing tracks that he himself created is a rather unusual thing for the era.

I haven't heard or seen the DVD version of this that's currently being hawked on late night American TV. So, I have no idea what it sounds like. But the audio accompanying the version of this with the highest view count on YouTube is horrendous; it sounds like it's coming from a 50¢ speaker mounted in a tin can. Here's the video I originally downloaded to work on:

I decided to have a go with making the audio a little more palatable, completely for my own amusement. It could use some more work, but this is the first time I ever tried anything like this. In case anyone cares about this sort of thing, I used Audacity, GarageBand and QuickTime Pro, along with some free plugins.

Comments and criticisms are welcome!

Love ya, Todd!

That mix was horrific. Seriously.... listen to this and then ANY other version and if you don't notice a marked improvement, stop. Stop there.

Memories-years ago a man I considered a good friend told me this song was how he felt about me. He's since passed away, RIP Doug.

Okay, Mr FourDots, but I must say he's a bit weird-lookin'... Then again so was Alice Cooper, David Bowie, and (Edgar Winter). Anyway...Thanks for the upload, and I really hadn't heard this since about 1990, give or about ten years. It was indeed a big, BiiiiiiiiiiiiG HIT in about 1974, I think.

After watching this, I'm beginning to think he is Liv Tyler's father and not Steven Tyler! Look closely at the mannerism and expressions! It's Liv Tyler!

Todd Rudgren got the band meatloaf started. He should be in the hall of fame.

I love this man. I saw him in 1979 with cheap trick eddie money and the cars. I think there was also a group called Roadmaster.... great concert.

Ha ha, I remember this performance from when I was a kid. I had saved up my allowance and bought the "Hello It's Me" 45RPM single from Grant's department store. I had know idea who TR was or what he looked like (the cover of "Something/Anything" was no help). It was just a cool song that was on the radio. When I found out that Todd was going to be on Midnight Special, I stayed up to watch the show, and then...this! Boy, was I scared. I was so shocked to learn that this wonderful, melodic song was written by one of those rock and roll freaks that my parents had warned me about. It was probably another ten years before I could go near a Todd Rundgren album again!

This tune seemed to play the entire last year of my military duty, never tired of hearing it
