Helen was a great instrumentalist and a good harmony singer. It's sad that June and Johnny continued to perform after they were both old and had health problems, and simply couldn't sing anymore. June's voice is jarring here as she tries to sing harmony.

I don't think there was an instrument Helen couldn't play and she had such a lovely smile. Though her voice isn't well known I've always liked it. I go back and forth on my favorite Carter but it's usually the one I'm listening too. LoL

@Patricia A....yep, beautiful and haunting. Ethereally beautiful, I might add. And just like you, I never tired of listening to it.

The most beautiful and saddest song ever. I wish I could have had a cup of coffee with Helen and all the sisters. What talent. I love that part at 2:05 to 2:14. She's thinking...nailed it. Again. Tough solo.

A family that sing together makes my heart beat faster. I really enjoy listening this kind of Carter music.

Helen was a musical genius, June had the stage presence and Anita the voice of an angel.

Hard to believe that all of these lovely ladies are no longer with us. But can you imagine the beautiful music we're going to be greeted with when we pass through the golden gates of that great Opry in the sky?

Sounds the closest to my early fifties Columbia recording. That's the best version of that song you'll ever hear. Bless you Mommy Maybelle, and thanks for showing a young fellow the "Carter Scratch".

I have heard this song since I can remember and love to hear the Carter's but what gave me the most pleasure was to hear my Momma sing this song....

This performance was very shortly before Maybelle's death. Apparently she was a stabilizer in JC's life. Not long after, he went back to drugs and by 1980, had fired the Carters and Marshall Grant. He & June separated, briefly, around that time.In his books he acknowledged the profound influence that Ezra and Maybelle Carter had on him.
