My son, Jeremy sang with a quartet at Mount Vernon Nazarene College about 12 years ago. and this is one of the many songs they did. They did an awesome arrangement, but I never get tired of listening to the Statesmen Quartet

It was very nice to run across this while researching my famous relative, Big Chief. He was my dad's first cousin, therefore my 2nd cousin, I guess. Now I know where my dad got his hair from, and mine to some extent. That trait carried on down the line. It's very obvious, looking at Big Chief that the Indian blood was prominent, as I recall hearing my dad talk about. It's a shame he had to die so young, at age 50, in Nashville. My dad always got a kick out of saying he was born in Ty Ty GA just outside Tifton. Not many know it, but according to Wikipedia, and Elvis "memoirs" EP got his famous "leg shaking" from Big Chief since he attended a lot of the Statemen's concerts in Tupelo when he was about 9-10 yrs. old. They even got him up on stage to sing a couple of songs with them. Big Chief lives on in my mind to this very day.

Everybody knows that the personality of the quartet shines through in the bass, and it is for this reason that the Statesmen were the best to ever cross the stage.

I think Doy Ott is one of the best baritones ever, his voice is always so smooth.

@hondarideralex Yes he does. If they ever make a Statesmen movie, Jimmy Kimmel could play Doy Ott, don't you think? LOL

@statesmenfan JD Sumner is by far the best bass singer of all time. George Younce is a very close second.

@metanoeo1 Yeah, Tim Riley is good. I like the bass of the Legacy Five too.

@Rev1981 That's typical Big Chief. He always sounded like he had marbles in his mouth or something. Very mumbly and hard to understand. I'll take Tim Riley or London Parris over Chief any day.

@Rev1981 Considering the tempo and proximity from the mic, he seems especially clear and crisp to me. The Cathedrals set the standard for this song in the modern quartet age, yet they were at a much slower tempo. Chief was a rhythmic bass. The Lefevres also had a very fast arrangement of this song.

@codykokinda That was just this particular song....Big chief can seriously get it done when he wants/needs to.

@Rev1981 T.V. sound wasn't that great. Also, they do it really fast. Tim Duncan of Signature Sound has problems with his diction on this song, and they do it much slower. Just that type of quartet song. But for tone and feel, no one beats Big Chief and the Statesmen. They were the group every quartet wishes they were. From the Cathedrals to GVB, they all use stuff learned from the Statesmen.
