I just never heard this before Bonnie Pointer around 1978-79. The 'Supremes" could sing anything and make it sound good, but I think Bonnie Pointer's version is more well known.

But then mary also writes, in the same book, that they recorded the song in 1965?????? I looked on the don't forget the motor city internet site and it stated that the song was completed in November '67. But that is version 2.

hi mowestmotown. I always thought it was Cindy and still think it's cindy. But we can never say for 100% when it comes to the supremes LOL. I did have a look in mary's dreamgirl book and in her itinerary she says that they recorded heaven must have sent you on october 6 1967 by which time cindy already joined them. On the same day they recorded stay in my lonely arms which has definitely cindy on background as you can hear her clearly at the extended bit on the end. teunis ;)

Elgins' is much better... As much as I love the Supremes and Diane's voice, I really like the Elgins' version better.

All the producers who have worked with Diana Ross have commented on her always being prepared, that is, knowing the melody, knowing the lyrics, showing up on time and using the studio time efficiently. The same praise was given to Jean Terrell.

WTF are you to make assumptions? ONLY ASSES ASSUME, and you obviously an ASS! Diane THE BERRY GORDY MOTOWN WHORE Ross & her PIMP by the 1970's created a BASTARD (Rhonda Silberstein Gordy Ross) as with Diane pregnant, Berry denying fatherhood she had to marry Robert Silberstein and in seven month she gave birth to the spitting image of THE BOSS Berry Gordy's OUT OF WEDLOCK CHILD! That was the culmination of their INSIDIOUS AFFAIR that had already destroyed partnerships & friendships THE SUPREMES!

HamlettKenneth...For you to compare the way all other groups severed ties and lead singers and in some cases the groups went on with their careers to the way Berry Gordy & Diane Ross dealt with the still # 1 FEMALE GROUP OF ALL TIMES is down out ignorant and one sided! Berry Gordy had no intentions of having THE SUPREMES succeed as Diane Ross success depended on the slow death of THE SUPREMES, the proof was right out of the gate THE SUPREMES / Up The Ladder # 10, Diane's Reach Out # 20!

LOL....HamlettKenneth... It baffles me that anyone with any self respect, integrity & real ethics would validate Diane Ross, a woman who's claim to fame was to get into the pants of THE BOSS, her boss, the real BOSS, Motown Berry Gordy who together embarked on an insidious SEX FOR STARDOM alliance that got FLORENCE BALLARD ousted from the group because of her opposition on allowing them to turn THE SUPREMES into the platform for her solo career!

Most people admire and respect that sort of determination and that kind of work ethic. But, inevitably, there are those who find fault with even the most admirable qualities. Thanks for the information. I had never heard it, and it only adds to my admiration for that hardworking woman who made history.

You must lead such an unhappy life dwelling on the departure of a lead singer from a singing group 40 or so years ago. Do you hate Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Pattie LaBelle (who actually left two groups which dissolved when she left), Sting, Paul McCartney, etc. They all left groups for solo careers, and this list could be much longer. Ms. Ross and Mr. Gordy made a decision that in retrospect was brilliant. The company filled Ms. Ross' vacancy and the group continued. Move on.
