This seems to be one of the first songs with similar thematic content to Roman Candle. It's about a person who wants to help someone but can't get the courage to do so, so he idles. Part of me thinks it's kind of Elliott berating himself for not taking action in whatever this situation is. Throughout Roman Candle, a car is consistently used as a method of escape from a bad situation. It's kind of the beginning of the theme of helplessness and frustration that embodies that album.

I get what you're saying. I think it's one in the same though. To talk about freedom through death, you have to ask what he's being freed from. And now, it wouldn't only be addiction, but that's certainly part of it.

I think it means a change in the life, it may be some kind of new birth that is the positive reaction or death that is the negative (or maybe positive) reaction. I don't know if I'm right, but Elliott used to have some favourite lines and, if this has the same meaning as the one in XO, I think "Indipendence Day" means death.

What do you think Independence Day is about? I'm sure there's a reason that date stuck in with his personal life, but at it's face value, it's IN - DEPENDENCE day...get what I mean? Maybe this song isn't about drugs, but the other song sure is, and he liked to blur the lines. It could just be a story of his dad picking him up from his mom and step-dads house for a Holiday and how he felt at the time.

Independence Day? This doesn't sound like it, but obviously the lyrics are related. Wonder what it means.

@Yrteop He's in the car But he won't start Until you're gone upstairs And driving past He'll move his hat To block out the glare He'll pull up to open the door Independence day Yeah, but he won't come out before Indenpendence day So go back inside Upstairs and hide He'll probably talk to himself about you Til eyes are red It's all said And he'll just drive without you He'll pull up to open the door Independence day Yeah, but he won't come out before Independence day Independence day

after listening to elliott for a long time, i somehow missed this one... feels great to hear for the first time. His voice feels so similiar to his 'later' stuff and pretty different from the vibe on this album. Thanks for uploading, I'm thinking about picking up the ep now. Can someone post the lyrics, or make an effort... it would be appreciated? Thanks.
