I feel that way except the exact opposite. Kanye can't sing so he relies on the autotune to belt out his blues. Here, Kris Allen to me sounds like he's just trying to show off his vocal range and the all the instruments used in this version doesn't help the lonely sounding factor.

Well, here's my reasoning and it applies to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", as well. "Heartless" is a song that tells a sad, sorrowful story, one of hopelessness. When Kanye tells the story, he makes it sound upbeat, a tone that doesn't apply to the tale, making Kanye's version inappropriate. When The Fray and Kris Allen tell the story, they actually use their voices to portray the appropriate emotion behind the story. That might be why "people like this version."
