HAVE MERCY ON THE CRIMINAL

Elton John

Don't Shoot Me (I'm Only The Piano Player) (1973)

Have you heard the dogs at night

Somewhere on the hill

Chasing some poor criminal

And I guess they're out to kill

Oh there must be shackles on his feet

And mother in his eyes

Stumbling through the devil-dark

With the hound pack in full cry

Have mercy on the criminal

Who is running from the law

Are you blind to the winds of change

Don't you hear him any more

Praying Lord you got to help me

I am never gonna sin again

Just take these chains from around my legs

Sweet Jesus I'll be your friend

Now have you ever seen the white teeth gleam

While you lie on a cold damp ground

You're taking in the face of a rifle butt

While the wardens hold you down

And you've never seen a friend in years

Oh it turns your heart to stone

You jump the walls and the dogs run free

And the grave's gonna be your home

Elton's rhythm section was awesome. When he got rid of Nigel and Dee after Captain Fantastic his music lost a lot of it's edge. I know he brought them back later, but that was a terrible move in 1975.

Fuck these two guys had some talent back then. Haven't heard this for 30 years, still as awesome now as then.

One of my fav EJ songs, up until the Album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboys he was one of the Best then it all went to hell but still Madman across the Water and Don't Shoot me are a couple of the Greatest Albums ever.

"Sweet Jesus . . .". That's how a lot of people 'hear' the Bible because the preachers are looking at their wives while preaching from the pulpit. So much confusion. Because that's the only way their shit will fly . . . before you catch on to their "shit". He's up there preaching spirit while looking down at his wife.

The start reminds me of Eric Clapton's (Derek and the Dominoes) Layla

Ah, how phenomenal was he. The great Elton John - before he started regurgitating his hits at funerals and weddings.

One of he & Bernie's best compositions, live or as here in the studio version. I saw him in 72 & have been a fan since.

If you have head phones or just good ear buds listen how every note is nailed and the emotions of the strings and vocals as they build : ) The structure of this is beyond and found in very little music today

Just a great song... Mercy might change a man... harsh punishment based on revenge, very rarely does; if ever. A real brilliant song, and this version was still with Elton's original Band, which was His best ever...... along with the great Bernie Taupin. I just love this song..... Justice HAS TO BE sprinkled with mercy and compassion.
