"The rock is gonna fall on us, he woke with a start

And he ran to his mother, the fear dark in his heart

And he told her of the vision that he was sure he'd seen

She said: "Go back to sleep son, you're having a bad dream!"

Silly child--

Everybody knows the rock leans over the town

Everybody knows that it won't tumble to the ground

Remember Chicken Little said the sky was falling down

Well nothing ever came of that, the world still whirls around

"The rock is gonna fall on us," he stood and told the class

The professor put his chalk down and peered out through his glasses

But he went on and said; "I've seen it, high up on the hill

If it doesn't fall this year then very soon it will!"

Crazy boy--

Everybody knows the rock leans over the town

Everybody knows that it won't tumble to the ground

We've more important studies than your fantasies and fears

You know that rock's been perched up there for a hundred thousand years

"The rock is gonna fall on us." He told the magistrates

"I believe that we can stop it but the time is getting late

You see I've done all the research my plans are all complete."

He was showing them contingencies when they showed him to the street

Just a madman--

Everybody knows the rock leans over the town

Everybody knows that it won't tumble to the ground

Everybody knows of those who say the end is near

Everybody knows that life goes on as usual round here

He went up on the mountain beside the giant stone

They knew he was insane so they left him alone

He'd given up enlisting help for there was no one else

He spent his days devising ways to stop the rock himself

One night while he was working building braces on the ledge

The ground began to rumble the rock trembled on the edge

"The rock is gonna fall on us! Run or you'll all be crushed!"

And indeed the rock was moving, crumbling all to dust

He ran under it with one last hope that he could add a prop

And as he disappeared the rock came to a stop

The people ran into the street but by then all was still

The rock seemed where it always was or where it always will be

When someone asked where he had gone they said: "Oh he was daft.

Who cares about that crazy fool." And then they'd start to laugh

But high up on the mountain

When the wind is hitting it

If you're watching very closely

The rock slips a little bit"

Harry Chapin is probably best known for a song called, The Cats in the Cradle. I grew up listening to Neil Diamond and Harry Chapin on 8-Track!This song shook me the first time I heard it as a child, while wearing those big 70's headphones with the little volume dial on the right ear. It's about what Harry always talked about in his shows, that one person CAN make a difference no matter what people may say.Harry Chapin - The Rock"The rock is gonna fall on us, he woke with a startAnd he ran to his mother, the fear dark in his heartAnd he told her of the vision that he was sure he'd seenShe said: "Go back to sleep son, you're having a bad dream!"Silly child--Everybody knows the rock leans over the townEverybody knows that it won't tumble to the groundRemember Chicken Little said the sky was falling downWell nothing ever came of that, the world still whirls around"The rock is gonna fall on us," he stood and told the classThe professor put his chalk down and peered out through his glassesBut he went on and said; "I've seen it, high up on the hillIf it doesn't fall this year then very soon it will!"Crazy boy--Everybody knows the rock leans over the townEverybody knows that it won't tumble to the groundWe've more important studies than your fantasies and fearsYou know that rock's been perched up there for a hundred thousand years"The rock is gonna fall on us." This song scared the crap out of me when I was little. The first crash chord still makes me jump every time.

This song can apply to the Federal Reserve right now. It, like the little boy, is trying to stop a rock that will always fall, and all it can do is so the rock for a short time while the danger of a financial depression only increases as it is being built up.

Harry did attend the Air Force Academy, I believe, and decided against a military life while there.

Interesting. Harry was very much a 'global society' kind of guy. I doubt very seriously if he was thinking in terms of our military being the poor guy that feel under the rock. Given his liberal mind set, and the time that the song was written, I think it was a reflection on the people that speak out for the rights of the little guy, and the people who scoff at them. In our current time, I would think Harry would be referring to global warming and the nay-sayers who refuse to acknowledge it.

The part that gives me chills is the moment right before the lyrics "stop the rock himself". The music captures exactly that he knows exactly what's going to happen to him, and he has no choice but to go through with it. This man was absolutely brilliant.

IMO quietly his best song. People on both sides of this story need to hear it.

This is such a scary and realistic song. One poster I've seen among the US military lately is "I guard against the Dangers you pretend don't exist." This song, and "Bummer" - Harry wasn't a soldier, but he understood us. So many things, here in the Land of Plenty, the Fat Sheep bah and bleat about how terrible things are...when the true danger is still out there.
