[Note I Changed the pitch, the original version better (in my opinion) in time I'll try to find a new way]

Listen to this song then listen to taxi, come back here and tell me, Taxi or Greyhound and why if you'd be so kind.

I love this song, the descriptions, the realistic thought process, the relate-able person (harry I believe), the meaning, and the realization. defiantly in my top 5 of his.

I dare say if you take anything from harrys music take:

"Looking to tomorrow is the way the loser hides

I should have realized by now that all my life's a ride.

It's time to find some happy times and make myself some friends

I know there ain't no rainbows waiting when this journey ends.

Stepping off this dirty bus first time I understood

It's got to be the going not the getting there that's good

That's a thought for keeping if I could.

It's got to be the going not the getting there that's good."

-it's gotta be the going not the gettin' there that's good!

-think about it

"It's midnight at the depot

And I drag my bags in line.

Travellin' light, I got to go

But the bus won't be on time.

Everybody's looking half alive.

Later on the bus arrives.

They punch my ticket

I find a seat

And we move out past the lights.

Come on Driver, where's the heat?

It's cold out in the night.

I keep telling to myself that I don't care.

Come tomorrow, I'll be there.

Take the Greyhound.

It's a dog of a way to get around.

Take the Greyhound.

It's a dog gone easy way to get you down.

Tired of watching this night go by

So I look across the aisle.

The window's frosted, I can't sleep

But the girl returns my smile.

She reminds me of someone I knew back home.

So I doze. So it goes.

I'm wrinkled on my stool at the rest stop.

The waitress being cozy with the highway cop.

My coffee's tasting tired.

My eyes roll over dead.

Got to go outside and get the gas out of my head.

Oh, to be in bed.

You got me driving.

I'm on your Greyhound bus and you're driving.

But there's nothing new about Greyhounds.

Nothing new about feeling down.

Nothing new about putting off

Or putting myself on.

Looking to tomorrow is the way the loser hides

I should have realized by now that all my life's a ride.

It's time to find some happy times and make myself some friends

I know there ain't no rainbows waiting when this journey ends.

Stepping off this dirty bus first time I understood

It's got to be the going not the getting there that's good

That's a thought for keeping if I could.

It's got to be the going not the getting there that's good. "

I like Harry's last lyric"Its got to be the going, not the getting there, thats good"That is the way I feel about air travel.Airports, being jammed aboard a plane in tight quarters, you do not get much for services-have to pay for drinks and some pretzels or nuts and put up with other passengers-noisy kids, other disgruntled passengers etc.-paying for luggage carts.I got yelled at at an airport for using a wheelchair to move my bags.

Taxi and this song were always my 2 favorites, hands down equally. This is a ballad of pure genius.

Thanks for this. I thought it was lost forever. Taxi's everywhere, but couldn't find Greyhound. I love this song more than any of his others because I can really relate to it. I took countless buses while I was in the Army from '76 to '79. This could have been my theme song. Every word is so true. Sometimes it is the "goin' not the gettin' there" unless something happy is waitin' for you. Like Holidays. But if you're going home on leave after getting a Dear John letter, then it's a drag. Sigh.

I like this one better. I'm a little partial because I used to drive for them. It is true though. Even as a driver out of Florida, used to ride to N.Y.C. to work for the summers. Made a lot of money doing it.

The slight deepening is an excellent touch. (I am a carrier audio engineer). This a truly beautiful song. I have been in love with this whole album since I discovered it in my college days in the 80s (dogtown never did that much for me but the rest makes up for it)

@SongsofHarry Very Good, He talked about how Greyhound was looking forward to hearing it and thought they may use it in a commercial, of course they didn't, At live concerts he would usually give a story about what led to the song before he sang it, sometimes very funny stories where the band would banter with him,

@SongsofHarry My nutshell opinion of "Sniper": Freakin' brilliant! Now, that kind of "jarring" works perfectly within the storyline of the song. Must admit it took me a couple of listens to "get" it, but it really gets under your skin. Could be written today, of course, and would probably be a smash hit. Didn't gel with his persona back then, though, and I don't think it ever gets played on the radio. It's the one I play and say, "So, you think you know Harry? Dig this!" Many minds blown.

I agree... with both of you. Beyond the meaning that each of us takes from each song, taxi strikes me a little more personal, whereas greyhound seems a broader appeal to enjoy the journey, msgs.en masse. The trip may be tougher, but on the whole Greyhound is a bit more blunt, like a bus, it's a rough ride in realism & like life goes faster, til you stop, get off & realize the ride's wrung your heart & you don't know how & it may take years to unravel so many tangles messages; layers of meaning.

@TinyDancer500 I have to disagree I feel that it never takes you away from the story, but in fact adds a climax to it one more intense and deep to the character then what's provided in Taxi "Well another man...". If there was one thing I'd change about the song I'd kick out the Chorus. I'm very interested in what you'll have to say, if you have anything to say, about Sniper.

Ran out of room :-) Just wanted to add that I rarely play "Taxi" without following it up with "Sequel", so I tend to think of it as one long song. "Greyhound" is a terrific song for what it is, but I will always vote for "Taxi/Sequel" which really isn't fair, but what can ya do? I still smile and/or cry a little tear when he sings "But I ended up taking a taxi 'cause that how I got this far" in "Sequel", but I'm just an old softie at heart. Thanks for asking, hon!

Personally speaking, I think "Taxi" grabs you and drags you into the story right from the get-go. This one is more of a message song as opposed to a story song, that message being (as you've mentioned), "It's got to be the going not the getting there that's good." I've always found that whole frantic bridge (if that's the right term) a little jarring on the nerves as compared to the "Baby's so high that she's skying" part in "Taxi" which doesn't take you out of the song, but just adds to it.
