I like this song probably the best out of the ones in the Dark Knight OST because it mirrors the second half of the film so nicely (arguably the better half of the movie, though the first half is not bad by any measure). While the song starts out with the standard Dark Knight theme/motif, the song is somber until around 2:10. This can be paralleled to Wayne's despondence at the death of Rachel and his consideration of its consequences on him and his identity as Batman. Around 2:10, the song starts to build in tone as Batman resolves to take revenge on the Joker (brilliant performance by Heath Ledger by the way), albeit using some ethically questionable tactics to do so. At around 4:30 the standard Dark Knight theme kicks in again, as Batman is out and about accomplishing his job (there is probably a closer connection between the plot and the song because this segment of the song might or might not be the background music to the final fight scene). The section has a tone reminiscent of Gordon's speech at the very end of the film, probably meant to inspire awe in the viewers regarding the selflessness and heroism of Batman. However, the brilliant man that he is, Zimmer ended the song with the Joker's theme, to remind viewers/listeners that the real "winner" of the film is the Joker: Joker eventually forces Batman to break his "one rule," as he promised he would do. This is why Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard are such brilliant film score composers: not only do they make such brilliant music, they make music that will truly help viewers connect with a film on a deeper level.
