amen to that, brother. i wore this one out, along with that painfully sad song Mr Weatherman, on my cassettes in the early 80s when i was living in nacogdoches, TX. i had lost my gf, I had a lousy job, and i lost my wonderful grandma in el campo, tx.

My favorite Hank Jr. song. Love Steve Young's lyrics on this, a song like this is the hardest to write, because the lyrics are dirt simple yet totally cryptic. Not an easy task to accomplish as well as Steve Young did here.

This is great, but I'd love a live version with maybe just Hank, guitar, and pedal steel. Something like that. For my taste, orchestration and real country don't mix so well.

Some of the songs from this album were actually released in 1978. So, I actually believe the album was released in 1978 not 1979. The title song "Family Tradition" was released in early 1979 before the release of Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound. However, "I fought the law" & "Old Flame, New Fire" were released, and on the country single charts in 1978.
