Current earworm, and shows you what a weirdo I am. Normal folks get a Hall & Oates song in their head, it’s “Private Eyes.” Or “Rich Girl.” Or “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do).” Me? I get “Johnny Gore and the C Eaters.”

"Room To Breathe" sounds like a Rolling Stones track. :)

Eddie, what is your favorite song from the 1976 set, and which one is your favorite from the 1977 set?

That may be. I'm just going by the stories I've heard about how they wrote the song. that they were in Alabama driving by a bar that had a sign saying "johnny gore and the cheaters" except the letter "h" fell off of the sign and that's how they got johnny gore and C-eaters. My grandfather did have a band and a record called johnny gore and the cheaters and he was from Alabama so all facts line up. But again I'm just going by what I've read on the internet about how Hall & Oates wrote the song.

The Johnny Gore in this video is not old enough to be your grandfather! In fact he is my husband and he has 1 daughter and no other children.

Yeah, thing is that, by his own admission (Dangerous Dances, 1984), Oates didn't know it was supposed to be "Cheaters" until they were returning from the gig they were playing, and he saw that the "h" had been replaced on the sign. He thought "what kind of a crazy name is that for a band?", and then wrote the song first. ^_^

The MusikLaden graphics are always the lowest budget, but it always seems to work for some odd reason. It looks like something you'd see on a sign in a Zayre department store in 1980 or something.

Johnny Gore was my grandfather. He passed away some time ago. I grew up hearing story about him from my father. I wish I could find out more about his music career but his widow is a crazy woman who's keeping all of his belongings from his family. I'd love to hear about anything anybody knows about him.

I knew Johnny Gore personally and even worked with him for about a year. A friend who had previously worked with him told me the "H" story long before I knew this song existed. I learned about the song by accident while searching "Johnny Gore". Small world.

I thought that was the joke too, until John explained to me that the name of the band was up on a sign and the letter "H" had fallen off, thus changing it from "Cheaters" to "C eaters".

Johnny Gore and the Cheaters was a locally popular country band that played in Birmingham, AL in the 1960s and 1970s. The "h" fell off (or blew off) the marquee outside the club; hence, "Johnny Gore and the "C" eaters. True story.
