See...this explanation is seriously bottom line and I really like it...you can never watch one performance or one video when you check out someone. This is a really good explanation.

That's really interesting! I've recently started jamming with a friend who's a pretty accomplished cellist, and she said something similar. On the competitive circuit, musicians are trained to be performers, to play certain things the right way. When you sit down with a band with no sheet music, just your instrument and your ears, it takes a completely different mindset. Those technical skills are tools, but that's all they are - it's how you use them that makes you a musician.

I really wish I had something like this available to me when I was a kid taking the rcm exams. All of my teachers were so obsessed over competitions and high scores on exams they never actually taught me to really play. My buddies in a band asked me to jam once and I couldn't even keep up despite the fact that I was technically at a much higher level than them. They could transpose songs into different keys and they never even had lessons where as I had 12+ years piano and couldn't transpose

@patnorris you on the other hand delivered an outstanding senior recital performance in your college classroom for the 15 family members and friends that showed up. Teach us your ways.

This is gold. I'm a teacher, not even of music, but these are the things that go through my head as I try to help my students see the big picture AND get through their current challenges. Hal is great.

He said exactly what I have been believing for years...better to understand how to wring the MOST out of everything you already know...it's easier to retain and implicitly requires creative processes to achieve such a goal.

I agree with Hal on a number of issues. He has confirmed some things that I discovered on my own.
