This is in memory of a charming old man who used to live in my street; he was a French speaker, but was from one of those exotic French islands somewhere like the Indian Ocean, and in his heavily accented English he would always say to me, "Greece, beautiful music ! Beautiful music ! Guns of Navarone, beautiful singing !". He would then hum this tune to me, and always asked me if I could get it for him. Well it was in the days before Internet, so it took me a couple of years, but I eventually found this song on a Greek Folk Songs CD, and it was just wonderful to see the delighted expression on his face when I presented it to him !

It turns out they have been betrayed. There is an informer amongst them.

This scene beautifully conveys the tension and fear. As the proprietor of the café tries desperately, to brush off of the Nazis. Without making them suspicious. The close up of the faces conveys the nervousness. A truly life and death situation. The Nazis were well known for taking take reprisals against villages harbouring resistance fighters. He tells them very apologetically, that this is a wedding celebration, and that unfortunately they have no spare tables.

When I Googled the scene with James Darren who sang in the movie, it comes up as Yassu. What does this mean? It was a beautiful wedding scene (without the bad guys)

This was a great movie when writers were expected to be masters of their crafts. The actors were also top-notch.

This was during the Greek occupation by Nazis during World War 11. The song is pretty. I heard in Europe long before the movie was made. The Greeks are very festive people in culture of both music and dress. I had a lot of Greek friends then, I respected them as I do all classes of the Baltic and Slavic. The little girl did betray these men. If these commandos declined surrender , they as well as the town would killed. The SS would do this they did every country they occupied.Damn good scene. Thanks for posting and sharing.

I like when Gregory Peck takes the flowers from the girl... the slight shift towards him the man with the pistol does. Very subtle.

'Guns of Navarone' is an impressive movie. Some quotes about WW2: "Hence we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks." (Winston Churchill) "All free peoples are deeply impressed by the courage and steadfastness of the Greek nation." (Franklin D. Roosevelt)
