Though Phil Spector was still an abusive creepy little fuck regardless of the origins of this song.

The original is meant to be ironic in its seeming happiness.

It captures the emotional discord and melancholy much better than the original. The original just sounds too happy..

That's not correct. The song is written about the abusive relationship between an entirely different singer (Little Eva) and her boyfriend (who was NOT Phil Spector). Spector did however produce the original version of the song.

.... close, but not quite. Yes, written by Carol King but written for Little Eva who was her baby sitter. Little Eva's boyfriend beat her regularly and Carol asked why she would put up with it. Eva said it's because he loved her. Phil spector insisted the Crystals record it over their objections. But, yes Spector had a volatile relationship with Ronnie (Veronica) of the Ronettes.

According to Wikipedia ... Goffin and King wrote the song after discovering that singer Little Eva was being regularly beaten by her boyfriend. When they inquired why she tolerated such treatment, Eva replied, with complete sincerity, that her boyfriend's actions were motivated by his love for her.
