The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band, based in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England. It was formed in 1917, as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery, by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band. The band has 28 players Brassed Off is a 1996 British film written and directed by Mark Herman. The film, a British-American co-production made between Channel Four Films, Miramax Films and Prominent Films, is about the troubles faced by a colliery brass band, following the closure of their pit. The soundtrack for the film was provided by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and the plot is based on Grimethorpe's own struggles against pit closures. I have played in brass bands over 35 years...not sure but get the feeling there is some miming going on, their faces are too straight with no expressions, I could never keep a straight face as they do. watch the Solo cornet player in his solo part at 1.45 he takes a breath but his instrument is still producing a sound...if they are I'm very surprised.I have followed them since their outstanding performance in the1985 Granada Championships.Love the film Brassed off, It was so very true to life, and that's coming from an Ex Notts Miner. Scargill was right in the end in what he said just went the wrong way about it.

Superb musicianship, though I'd expect nothing less from Yorkshiremen. Just a shame the camera crew and editor were on speed. I know it's a piece all about 'movement' but it would have been nice to see individual players without being made to feel sea-sick. I'll just have to go see them in person
