it's not nearly as cynical as you may think. greg lake wrote it around the acoustic intro which reminded him of jingle bells so he and his writing partner decided to write a christmas song. he explained in an interview that there are three types of christmas songs religious, party and songs about the feelings of christmas.for most people christmas memories are bittersweet full of joy but also disillusionment and loss thats what he was trying to portray and he did it brilliantly.

As Christmas draws closer, many people - possibly even a majority - grow:- Increasingly anxious and stressed out- More self-absorbed and distracted- Less communicative with others- Less cheerfulThis is nothing new of course, and much has been said/written about it, for many years passing. Thus, it's really no mystery that those without family or with few friends find this a sad season, a hopeless season.
