This song could talk about many things, like hypocrites of religion. Take note of the line "Missionary politicians". Most people become prophets for profit. Also, Billie Joe wrote this song after attending the baptism of a friend's baby. And it also talks about fundamentalist religion.

I love this song for so many reasons. I'm not a christian, but I wouldn't say that I'm an atheist either. I don't deny the existence of God but I have my doubts. My favorite part of this song is the sarcasm in the line, "Put your faith in a miracle." that part gives me goosebumps every time. This is pretty much the only song I know that deals with hypocrisy in religion. I think there should be more. I absolutely love Green Day!!!

It does not, but it supports the values and ideas that American Idiot represents.

ok..i've just found my inbox, i never realised you had replied to my comment, only been 3 years, and 3 albums. the two albums i mentioned were GD's first two albums, they were full of solos, jason white never appeared until the dookie era, and dookie changed the world of music as we know it today with hardly any solos, as much as i enjoy a good guitar solo, there 10 a penny and theres no real place for them in punk rock
