Damn Th'Man

Technically speaking, it's all there, and more. Take a look at some Cobus Potgieter vids. He forgoes the theatrics (initially) in order to master technical proficiency. The strikes, transitions, time, tempo, flow...he puts all of that first and the result is some very precise and expert drumming. Not to say you need to abandon your own identity to emulate someone else, but lock that stuff down first. Sit down with a metronome and a drum pad for about 6 months (while giving the flips and twirls a break) to perfect your time. Other than that, very nice. Now put all you have into a band setting and see how it sounds.

I would never criticise anyone for hitting the drums too hard as my favourite drummer is John Bonham and he hit very, very hard. For such a hard hitter it is hard to comprehend the feel and finesse he had and some of the fills he used to just throw in at live events were genius. One of my other favourite drummers is Dave Grohl and he also hits very hard. More solid than Taylor Hawkins who is a supremely talented drummer but effective at the same time. The start of Teen Spirit is genius, It is so simple but when I used to do it prior to the start of a gig people would say Teen Spirit so we all want to create a signature fill like that.

I would say still a little bit of overplaying compared to Tre but unlike with Still into you by Paramore this is the sort of song you can overplay on and get away with it and live I have been guilty of doing the same but I would toward the end try mixing the rolls up with flams. I personally think it sounds better and makes it not so roll heavy. I have played this song live many times and it is such a great song to play, a real crowd pleaser too. I would say not strictly true to the original but you do not seem too bothered about that whereas as even from a young age I wanted to play covers note for note and spent many, many hours listening to Led Zeppelin to get the Bonham feel as accurate as I could. I do not do that now but I did then but as I have said above this is the sort of song you can overplay on anyway.
