Where there is a lull of truth, an institution springs up. But the truth blows right on over it, nevertheless, and at length blows it down. God bless the grateful dead and their fans, peace in the middle east!

".................Shipping powders back and forthSinging "black goes south while white comes north"And the whole world full of petty warsSinging "I got mine and you got yours."And the current fashions set the pace.Lose your step, fall out of grace. And the radical he rant and rage, Singing "someone got to turn the page"And the rich man in his summer home,Singing "Just leave well enough alone"But his pants are down, his cover's blownAnd the politicians are throwing stonesSo the kids they dance they shake their bonesCause its all too clear we're on our own"

To me, this song speaks of our incredible responsibility as caretakers of the entire planet (and perhaps the universe, unless we discover someone else out there one day). The fear down here we can't forget would seem to be referring to the threat of our self-destruction, specifically to the (relatively speaking) new threat of atomic weaponry. For the first time, we have the capacity to kill everything alive. This is terrifying, but the song manages to remain hopeful. We still have a shot.

Well there's still Widespread, all of the bands the Dead members are in now (Further, The Dead, Jerry Garcia Band, etc.), String Cheese, etc. Teeny bopper bubble gum shit was around the same time as the Dead were but they're all washed up drug addicts, now. There still is good music out there.
