This is a Reverend Gary Davis classic covered by the Dead. The Rev often would preceed his guitar solos with a spoken exhortation, such as "Great God Almighty, talk to me"... as Phil Lesh does here.

He at least says great god almighty in the 87 version, and 1980 which is my favorite version, I figured he just always says it.

In 78 in Des Moines Jerry was zooted for this show. And when they played this song he ruled it. I have the CD on me right now and I listened to both and they are the same. 77 and 78 are some of the best years ever in my opinion. The stuff alone they were doing was mesmorizing

prob' still a Betty, but I could be wrong. not doubting 78', but never noticed the Bobby "great god allmighty" before or after 77'. But here again, maybe i never noticed... pretty sure he doesn't sing that in the 80's or 90's... love this tune. thanks for the experience!
