This song has always been special and I remember every time I have heard it, including times at Dead shows. The most memorable was when Bertha was played for me while i was being prepped for Prostate surgery in May 2012. The surgery team played the entire song for me. It was the last thing I heard before they put me under anesthesia...really cool -:)

The definitive version for me..uptempo and Jerry is just on fire with the vocals and lead guitar..also brilliant bass, holding it all together

Paul Pena's "Venutian Lady" sounds very similar to this... must've been Dead-approved though, since Jerry and Merl play on that track as well!

This is my favorite Dead album (which is, admittedly, a matter of personal taste, though American Beauty is a close second, and the Mars Hotel a close third), and this song is just classic Dead--the lilt, the rhythm, the joy--and Jerry's sweet low tenor voice. Thank you for posting it. It has that 1930's feel to it.

walkin into a show, a dhit late as usual, i have heard the opening notes of Bertha on more than one occasion, it seriously makes me more motivated and moves me from a stoner stroll to holy shit!, the crack in my mind is opening, as i would always run in spinnin an swirlin... miss this, soooooo much!
