I heard this song most of my life and got teased. There is even a version called 'Wake Up Irene"!

I've liked this song ever since I heard it by the Weavers in 1950. I sing and play it on my keyboard often.

This shows what an innovator of recording technique Les Paul was. The sound of the echo and the double tracking is vintage Les and he knew how to get out of the way of a great lyric and let the tender voice of Mary take over. There is not a person in the music industry today from recording to perdorming that doesn't owe an unmeasurable...make that UNMEASURABLE...debt to the great man.

this song is generally considered to have been written by Lead Belly, although as with many folk songs, the true origins are unclear. There was an American song in the 1840s that shared some lyrics. It could trace back to Ireland, but if so, that is unknown. Either way, this is a great version

A real classic - originating from Ireland - and who better to perform it than Les and Mary? Thank you for uploading it.
