Ägypten war im November 1869 durch die Eröffnung der Suezkanals Weltöffentlichkeit getreten. Fast gleichzeitig mit der Einweihung des Kanals hatte auch das Opernhaus von Kairo seine Pforten geöffnet. Um erneut international Furore zu machen, ist Ismail Pascha, der Khedive von in den Blickpunkt des Ägyptens bestrebt, in dem neuerrichteten Opernhaus eine Oper eines Weltberühmten Komponisten zur Uraufführung zu bringen. Im Auftrage des Khediven Schreibt daher Camille du locle , der Direktor der Pariser Opera Comique,nach einer Erzählung des französischen Ägyptologen Auguste Edouard mariette- Bey ,einen Libretoendwurf und legt diesen im Frühjahr 1870 Verdi vor. Verdi entschließt sich für das PROJEGT:Seine Bedingungen, eigene Wahl des Dirigenten ,der die Uraufführung leitet soll, sowie ein Honorar von 150 000 France. werden von den Auftraggebern Akzeptiert.
