This song was on the first release of her album, but removed on later releases. I love it and don't know why it was removed. There is a rumor going around that there were too many "miner", "grave", & "dying" songs on this album. If you are presenting the mountain folk's life experiences you cannot get away from those topics. I have family there. I know. Anyway, on the original track list for "Hell Among the Yearlings" released in 1998, the song is titled, "Company Grave Blues". On later information it is called "Company Graveyard Blues". Take your pick. This is outstanding music either way. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings wrote all the songs on the album. Enjoy!

LYRICS: Song and lyrics by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings:

These are Graveyard Blues Lyrics on http://www.lyricsmania.com/

A company girl of tender age,

A company girl of tender age,

I came to know my mother's trade.

We're up at dark and on the line,

We're up at dark and on the line,

Where morning cracks and spindle wide.

Each night I hear her cough and curse,

Each night I hear her cough and curse,

Through restless eyes, a bedside nurse.

Now by her side, I'll end the chill,

Now by her side, I'll end the chill,

I'll lay her down in a potters field.

I'd rather die and blow away,

I'd rather die and blow away,

Than take my rest in a company grave.

I'd rather die and blow away.

This song was on the first release, but taken off later releases. It is accurate about the mining life.
