Gillian Welch's timeless Appalachian-style classic Orphan Girl, originally from the 1996 "Revival" album. This is a very beautiful stripped-down live version from the Prairie Home Companion show in St. Paul, MN on 4.19.97, which I personally feel far exceeds the original. No video exists. I also uploaded "One More Dollar" from this show on YT.

Footnote: "Orphan Child" was also sung by the Carter Family, and more recently by Jody Stecher & Kate Brislin . . and other performers.

Back in university days, Gillian was mesmerized when she first heard the music of the Stanley Brothers. It was the music she grew up with. So, given her passion for this genre of "mountain music", I would conclude that Gillian's composition, "Orphan Girl" was inspired by Ralph Stanley's song, "The Orphan Child". She certainly identifies with these parent-less kids who seemed to number so many, "back in the day" ( the depression era; war time). Trouble is, today, with cyberspace "kidnapping" kids at their earliest age . . within and outside their homes, John Paul II coined an interesting phrase: "Parents with orphans". So, Gillian's composition applies really well to this situation.

This is great, not sure I like the Crooked Still version, although the banjo player is excellent, it's too clever.

And Gillian is in fact an orphan girl, according to her Wikipedia page. And she and Dave are keeping real music alive today, I might add as a personal opinion.

In answer to John Capone. You are 100% correct. What they are passing off today is a mish mash of junk. The people you mentioned are country and Lucinda Williams in top notch. You may also want to consider Miranda Lambert and ...of course Willie Nelson. Another ,and yes he is touring, is the great Merle Haggard.

Great song, incredibly well done. A version of this and also extraordinary is sung by Mumford and Sons with Emmylou Harris.
