Actually he was very successful in his solo adventure outside of the USA,It was cut short bye his voice going out and was reported he had too stop singing for a time or he would loose it.I believe his high notes took a toll during this time period.I think they wrote a piece on this during that time in rolling stone mag.

Best thing about (the band) Gillan, as opposed to Blackmore's Rainbow, is that they didn't try to bust into the American market. True artists play, write or paint what they want and not what they feel others want to see or hear. As a result the Gillan band always rocked with force while Rainbow, although often brilliant, became watered down and poppy. Didn't matter if Rainbow was playing arenas while Gillan was playing college venues. Integrity survives, conformity gets lost.

This was a great band, loved it, shame i never had the chance to see them live, i,m to young for that XD haha, when these guys where around I wasn't even born lol. Thank God we still have Deep Purple, Ian you're my favorite vocalist ever period ;).
