A little bit of Gilbert`s history here for newer fans who may not know ! This song - What could be Nicer ( Mum the kettle`s boiling ) was on Gilbert`s 1972 album BACK TO FRONT . ` For the Love of Ada ` was a popular British comedy series about the life of an elderly couple . In 1972 a spin-off movie was made , as was often the case with sit-coms of the 1970`s. I don`t think Gilbert actually wrote the song for the movie , but it was decided to use it over the opening scenes . It fitted the movie very well - and I`m sure this video will bring back many memories for those people around at the time .....

I was born in 72 and grew up listening to this. I still have the original single (it was B side of Clair)

It was great to see a Gilbert song used in a film for the first time. The film version would have been in mono from 1972 and was a different ‘take’ to the Back To Front release. There was more emphasis on the piano on the film and not much harpsichord so far as I can tell. It is a really nice version but you have to put up with the background film track of the early morning milk man delivering his milk and the rattle of the milk bottles.

@gosfanusa I think it`s the same Joe - but it`s from a downloaded mp3 - not the cd - so it could be from another source . You got GILBERTVILLE ! wow - will have to wait a few weeks for mine ! I hope it lives up to expectations - can`t wait to hear it . Just one more thing Joe - on you link to us here it says ` Friends THOUGH Gilbert - not ` THROUGH ` ! LOL I know you like to be accurate !!!! Thanks

HI Mo Question for ya! Is this the same version from Back to Front. It sounds a little different. It was Christmas here at home yesterday. My copy of Gilbertville arrived from England. Gilbert had promised it and sure enough he mailed it.

@crossbyfields Yes Colin brings back great memories for me too. The much loved Irene Handle and Wilfred Pickles - those were the days ! I remember this movie - Gilbert`s song was over the opening credits where it showed an ordinary English street with people going about their business , the milkman and things like that . Haven`t seen the film for years but it`s funny how things stick in your mind . Nostalgic stuff !

@RAYalized Hi Nicole - I can`t stop long - the kettle`s boiling ..... Did you know about this bit of Ray`s history ? His songs have been used a lot recently in movies ( usually Alone Again ) but this was the very first one back in 1972 . I wish more producers would use his songs for movie soundtracks - the possibilites are endess . Must go ...... the kettle .... where would we be without tea .......
