This song was first released in 1969 on the Major Minor label as the B-Side of MR MOODY`S GARDEN but without drums This is the second version released in 1971 on the Columbia label. Gilbert has never liked the up-tempo arrangment his first producers did on this recording , so in 1995 he recorded his " definitive " ballad version. The lyrics were inspired by the assassination of Robert Kennedy in 1968.

I dedicate this video to a very special Spanish lady named MAGDA ..........

@212wakka Yes I have never figured out why he doesn`t use the last verse on later versions . Someone should ask him the reason someday in an interview .

@jocksmen I have this song on a Pickwick album called "The Humble Beginnings Of England's Gilbert O'Sullivan and Gerry Dorsey." One side is a collection of Gilbert O'Sullivan's early work and the other side features songs by the artist later known as Engelbert Humperdinck. The album also features the O'Sullivan songs "Mr. Moody's Garden" and "Came To See Me Yesterday."

I love this version. I have been looking of the MP3 of this version for the longest time. Anyone?

Many people seem to like this version - maybe because it was how they first heard the song . In my case I only knew the later version for years until I finally tracked down the old version . I think the later version suits the theme of the song better - and he sings it better !

Thank you for posting this. This one of my favorite Gilbert O'Sullivan songs, and I much prefer this version over the later ballad version. There's something about this version that I find more emotionally moving than the ballad version.

No I`ve wondered why he doesn`t use those last lines about "We don`t know the reasons why they do these things " - I think they add something to the song. But i do prefer the later version, i think it`s one of his best-ever recordings.

I rather like the up-tempo feel to this one. I'd love if this was available on karaoke, i know i'd give it a shot :o-) Great up-load, thanks 10-fold. -Derek-
