A nostalgic look back at Gilbert`s debut album HIMSELF released 40 years ago in 1971 on the MAM record label . These are the closing two tracks on the album accompanied by some rare pictures of Gilbert taken at the time . How many of you are prepared to admit you were around at the time and bought this album ?

For three more great songs from this album see the video response below ....

I can just imagine the Beatles doing this.

Think it was also the B-side of Underneath The Blanket Go?

I think artistically he has stayed at the top - but commercially he has been struggling to regain his popularity . The court case that prevented him releasing music for about five years in the mid-eighties broke his momentum and it`s hard to recover from that . Many people are unaware of his on-going record releases and its a shame because he`s been producing some great music over the years . Its been said before he would have made a great Beatle - but he prefers to write music on his own .

Interesting that Paul Gambaccini (an evident fan) remarked that on first hearing the quality of Gilbert's work he thought he would be at the top for many, many years and it's a mystery that it didn't happen. Personally I think it's a shame he didn't join the Beatles after Paul McCartney left.

I rushed out to buy it on the strength of Too Much Attention which i heard on Radio 1's breakfast programme (Noel Edmonds?)

What a terrific song. Too bad no one in the US heard it! Himself (UK) had a slightly different track listing. The LP released in the United States, had, "We Will" (a recent UK single). The second US pressing deleted "Doing The Best that I Can" and "Susan Van Heusan" in favor of the number one smash, "Alone Again (Naturally)" and did away with the original "Himself" artwork since Gilbert had by this time upgraded his clothing style.

@faffytunes Yes ` Nothing Rhymed ` was on the album - probaly the main reason so many people rushed out and bought it ! ` Matrimony ` was on there too - not a single but still one of his best remembered songs .
