Two for the price of one here ! Gilberts first ever single released n 1967 on CBS Records ! The A Side " Disappear " is still available on some compilation albums - but the B Side " You " is currently unavailable on any official releases . The British group The Tremeloes also recorded " You " as they were on the same label at the time. You also get some nice rare photographs here from the early days !

You would have been the more commercial a-side - how odd that it was re-used as b-side to another single!Talking of that different early vocal style - I wonder whether Everybody Knows (b-side of Nothing Rhymed) doesn't in fact date from the period of the first three singles and the demos of Humble/Canzoni infamy.

You can easily hear GS's soul in even these old recordings,, he was already developed for the most part,, like a monarch butterfly about to leave his chrysallis!

@RWillemM Yes Rob - he had that connection in mind - but let everyone else figure it out for themselves ! One of the things I`ve heard him say in an interview is " I always try to avoid the obvious " ! It`s the same thing at the end of the recent song " Know what, You`re right " - he sings the full title all the way through , and on the very last line it`s " Know what ............ " and he doesn`t finish the line !! That would be too obvious !

@mohawk3881 It's showing what a wordsmith Raymond is; giving his audience the opportunity to connect 'Gilbert' the performer and 'O'Sullivan' the writer. Referring to the great Gilbert & Sullivan withou saying so!! I love Gilbert!

@TOMBANCROFT yes - that`s the original single you have there ! He just used the name GILBERT in the early days at his first two labels ( without any success ) . He had the image even then - the cap, jacket , boots etc - and when he was finally picked up by Gordon Mills at MAM Records and made it big with NOTHING RHYMED in 1970 he added his real name - O`Sullivan . His real name is Raymond O`Sullivan

I have this CBS single which I bought well before Gilbert O'Sullivan was a success. The label just describes the artist as "Gilbert". The release date on the label is 1967. I bought it at a junk shop with no idea who this Gilbert was. Obviously he soon changed his style considerably and hit the big time. The writer's name in brackets on the label is O. Sullivan (rather than O'Sullivan).

YOU should be re-released; it has that marvelous '2-nd' melody line you find on his best songs.

Uau, good song, YOU. I'm sure all Gilbert fans will enjoy a lot with this present. Pa-papapara-pa, pa-para-pa...a very catchy song!!! I mean I will have some problems with it...

Hi Brian - I love the quirkyness of these old recordings - even that strange vocal style he used at the start - but it was never a sound that was going to sell records ! He had no control over the production then and he still dislikes some of these early recordings - maybe that`s why most of them are still unavailable ! Nothing Rhymed was his first success ( i think that`s what you meant ) when he signed with MAM and had more control at the sessions .

RE: Early Ray: these recordings sound very quirky. old time sound, very affected vocals, then full band with horns. horns don't suit him. he is not a brash fellow. I think he is very lucky to have done Alone Again with everything just right. If it wasn't a worldwide hit, he would never have made it. I think he would have always been quirky and affected. That hit refined his style and made him more accessible to the public. Live and Learn.
