Fuck why dont people my age know about people who rebel like this and art like this? Why are 15 year olds taught trigonometry instead of amazing acts that people like this have created. And everyone wonders why the stereotypical teenager doesnt know how to appreciate when they are given nothing worthy

Just a thought: it seems that pride over the actions of ones ancestors, even when they were conquerors, is normal. The Japanese generally do not apologize for their actions in China and Korea, Turks do not apologize for what they did to the Armenians, Greeks, Kurds and others, Persians are proud of their ancient Empire, as are Italians of theirs. I doubt the mongol's apologize for Genghis Khan. I doubt the followers of Shaka Zulu apologized for their conquests. The idea that Western Europeans should feel guilty because our ancestors were prodigious conquerors seems somewhat abnormal given the above.Of course, it is also normal for the conquered to hate the conquerors. What is the take away? For those of us with some religious or spiritual sensibility, this is simply the way of life after the Fall, however your particular tradition conceives of it.

My god. Comment #1 has proven the point that America has been like this for a while. America is not the perfect country, yet everyone says it is. From the Revolutionary War to 9/11, America has faced many controversies and many tragedies, and sorry to say, but it seems to be our fault, as we Americans have done something bad before 2001. The question is.....what? Comment #1 answers it all.

White revolutionaries are the worst enemies of black communities. GSH knew it forty years ago, and we can see it now in Ferguson.

it's not like he hated whites, though. he was angered by the "four-year revolutionaries" with outrageous demands ("legalized smoke, or lower voting age, less lip in his generation gap, and fucking in the street") compared to what blacks were trying to attain ("a good home and a wife and a children and some food to feed them every night"), who would grow out of protest and "go back home with a clear conscience and a college degree" while blacks kept struggling.

But didn't Gil Scott Heron have a white wife? That's what my momma told me anyway. Not that it matters, but it's just ironic.

With embarrassment, I confess that I didn't listen to much Gil Scott-Heron, and I was familiar first with the sample of "Comment #1" from the sample on "Who Will Survive in America". I only recently listened to it, and damn. (But it's hard to extricate it from the version I recall from the Kanye album, and that does funny things to it as well.)

The idea that kanye slanders this guys image somehow seems a stretch to me. Kanye got me to this video, I realize this guy wrote it and it might actually be the best thing ever composed, but kanye still helped to spread the true message behind this guys voice
