TUM-BALALAIKA

A lad stood thinking all the night through,

Thinking, thinking, what to do?

Whose heart to take? Whose heart not to break? (2x)

Refrain:

Tum-bala, tum-bala, tum-balalaika, (2x)

Tum-balalaika, shpil balalaika,

Tum-balalaika, happy we'll be.

Maiden, maiden, tell me true,

What can grow, without the dew?

What can burn for years and years?

What can cry and shed no tears?

(refrain)

Silly lad, here's the answer true:

A stone can grow, grow without dew.

Love can burn for years and years.

A heart can cry and shed no tears.

(refrain)

i speak dutch. i always think yiddish sounds very similar to dutch and german and when i actually read words out loud i can easily pick out the similar words in dutch. it originated in europe. in europe, we still hear hasidic jews talk this language. in israel some people tried to stamp out the use of this great language.

Its yiddish my question is where are they from exactly. Im from the US however 95% of the metal I listen to comes from various areas of Europe. Sadly Americans just cannot even begin to compete with the Europeans when it comes to metal genius.

Yiddish is based on Medieval High German (from the Rhineland region) and is classified as a West Germanic language along with English and Dutch. It is closest to Swiss and Austrian forms of German. It is a the mother language f the Ashkenazi Jews (i.e. Germanic Jews)and it does contain Slavic and Hebrew elements. It used very old grammar and words so Google would;t be much more help than trying to translate Medieval English. Very cool language though. Gei in gezunterheyt ;)

Without wanting to hurt your religious feelings, as a linguist I view critically and curiously the notion of an intrinsicly holy language. Can you explain to me, from your (religious) point of view why Hebrew holds that position as an/the lashon hakodesh, as you mention?

That's pretty essentialist thinking...all the creole languages all over the world that have been around for any length of time have developed their own history and tradition quite separate from the languages that have originally fed into them. I agree that Yiddish was/is used predominantly in the diaspora but I don't think you should put it down like that.
