There's a school of thought that, since Eric's not actually singing "I'm gettin' rid of the B" as in "I'm gettin' rid of the bitch", but that his actual interpretation is "I'm gettin' ritta [rid of] the B." which would be her entire first name. I also think that them saying "B" instead of "bitch" just flows better with the song which is probably another reason for the shortened term. :-)
