It happens all the time. You hear a song on the radio, on Spotify or on YouTube and you're thinking "Wow, THAT sound is really nice. How do I get that?".

That's exactly what we thought when we heard Clean Bandit's song 'Rather Be'. So after some research time in the lab, Mattias shows you how to recreate the main synth sound from that song.

Why not do it with Subtractor? Much quicker and simpler - plus you can also apply some FM to make it more special. Up to everyone's taste though ~ just a suggestion.

I did the reset on my thor and I got a low sound . This guy already had other settings tuned or had a different sound in there . I never got close to that sound. .

Nice, I guess sometimes it's easier to just grab a Thor than going patch-hunting. Now I can get to the fun part. . .

There's only one sinewave in the original sound. The melody itself has lower notes that might make you think there was another sine at the lower octave. Also as noted before, you didn't recreate that snap, and also the LFO rate is quite off. Sorry if I'm being a bit rude, but these how-to videos are rather pointless if the sound isn't spot on.

I have also triedto replicate this sound. It is amazingly beautiful in it's simplicity, you know? Anyways, I sort of came to the same conclusion with the sine wave and all (didn't think of a LPF through the EQ though) but I didn't manage to achieve that "bite" in the beginning of every note. Any ideas on how to get that?

What I'd like to know is how to recreate what I call the "Pad of Despair". It's a harsh, dissonant, metallic-sounding pad that is used a lot in the show "The Biggest Loser". I've heard it in many other reality shows, too. I'm guessing it's a resonant comb filter effect of some sort?

The LFO-rate sounds like 1/16th of the BPM so if you tempo sync this it should be alrighty. Maybe just a little chorus and some tiny portamento are missing but I am not sure about that as probably the pitch LFO in the original track causes that portamentoish feel. Anyway...great that Thor can sound like this this. Hooray!
