Wasn't born until 53, but much thanks to the people of England who fought so hard against Nazi fascism so that we can enjoy the freedom to have a pint and listen to Gerry Marsden and his bandmates play such heartfelt music.

As a young lad growing up in the U.S. , I bagan to listen to the radio on a regular basis in late November of 1966 while living in El Paso, Texas. The radio station I listened to was 920 KELP.I had just turned 13 and my father had been in Vietnam for 3 months by then on a 13-month deployment.I was the only son and had two younger sisters."Tell It Like It Is" by Aaron Neville was the first song I listened to on a clock radio I had talked my mother into letting me move from the headboard in her room to the little headboard on the bed in my room at 5001 Blue Ridge Drive."98.6" by Keith was another new song coming out then and I was eager to wake up early in the morning to listen to these different pop tunes while (whilst) getting ready for school in the morning.I rushed to the the little bathroom across the hall from my room to look in the mirror to see how many new enemy pimples had suddenly appeared on my forehead, temples, or nose in the middle of the night while (whilst) keeping my attention on the songs on the radio."Come On Down (From The Top Of That Hill)" by Jackie DeShannon was on the charts and "Georgy Girl" by The Seekers would be coming out in a couple weeks in mid-December.Didn't care much for the tune the first few times I listened to it, but I soon liked hearing it and loved to whistle and sing it once I was out the door and walking to school. What does all this have to do with this video of Gerry Marsden playing "Ferry Cross The Mersey" at a Liverpool match you may now be asking? This song was released in December of 1964 almost 2 years previous to this special period of my youth I am now recalling. We only listened to the radio as a family while (whilst) driving across town or on short trips and that is the only occaision I could have heard "Ferry Cross The Mersey" being played when the song first came out.Although it was almost 2 years hence, this song was nonetheless being played on a regular basis on this radio station in Texas.I loved the song and the sincere passion that came across in Gerry Marsden's voice. There is a point at which you have listened to a song enough times that its fundamental message is understood completely for the first time and all subsequent times thereafter.Such was the case for me with this song.Although never having lived or been to this special place Gerry Marsden is professing his love and lifelong loyalty to in this song, I was nonetheless able to understand the emotional depth of his attachment to it.All this through a song! And conveyed to a 13-year old American living in Texas!I have this video stopped at 1:49 thru 1:57 because this wonderful woman in the crowd is gripped with profound tearful joy in the fullness and meaning of a song she is at one with. Her relative reaches down to kiss her because he understands this too.Multiply this by thousands of others there who were feeling things just as deeply, but were not captured on camera. The fans in the crowd swaying with this song and holding their Liverpool bannners proudly are proclaiming their affiliation to and affection for the place of their birth to each other and to the world at large.By means of your song, I get it Gerry!I got it all the way back in 1966 and I continue to get it now!Thank you for this message. Thank you for this gift.God bless you and continued good health to you Gerry Marsden! Your song and its message has reached more people than you will ever know. .
