Both Sting & George Micheal's versions tells the same story from 2 different perspective. Stings version is is sung in an authoritative manner. George's version is sun in a persuasive manner.This song is a story about Roxanne the prostitute. How the singer wants to take her out of that prostitution life.How would Sting do it? He would grab her by the shoulder in a strong manner and tell her with a firm voice to get her to give up the job. Lets say you put the guy as Tony Manero (Saturday Night Fever) telling Roxanne to give up her job. It lines up well with the tempo & style of the song.George on the other hand would sit down next to her, lights up a cigarette and talk to her about giving up her job on a bench along the street. In fact this video almost perfectly articulates it if you put George talking to Roxanne in it.Both versions are good. It really depends on the artist perspective. The problem with people who hate either version is, that they cannot visualize why the song song was sung in that manner. Hating it is far more easier than finding the reasons why.While i love Michael's version more, i cannot deny the story told from Sting's perspective.
